TAM grew from a simple conviction.
Actors need a process they can trust.
And people who understand the journey.
Where it began
Finding freedom
in acting.
Long before it became his career, acting changed how Derek saw himself.
As a child, illness left him isolated and short of confidence. A weekly acting class opened a different world. Through a character, he could explore a life beyond his own limitations. He felt free.
Years later, he had built a stable career as a personal trainer. But something was missing. After a long day at the gym, he sat in his car and asked himself when he had last felt truly happy.
The answer was acting. He returned to training and began building a professional career.

From experience to a process
Learning what the
work really asks of you.
Formal training gave Derek a foundation. Screen auditions showed him what he still needed to learn.
He needed a dependable way to prepare for camera, a better response to pressure and a clearer understanding of how to build a career. Craft. Mind. Business. Each mattered. None could do the work of the others.
Years of study, professional work and experimentation shaped his approach to screen performance: the SDA Method™. Its purpose is to give actors a dependable process for preparing their screen performances. Alongside it, he developed the habits, materials and relationships that helped him take greater ownership of his career.
Other actors began asking for help. Conversations became lessons. Lessons became programmes. And those programmes grew into The Acting Masters.

The work continues
Still an actor.
Building something
worth sharing.
Today, Derek continues to act, teach and develop TAM alongside a wider community of actors, coaches and industry professionals.
His aim is to help actors stop guessing, develop processes they can trust and take practical steps in the parts of their careers they can influence.
His wife and two children are a big part of that purpose, too. He wants them to see that meaningful work is worth pursuing, and that an uncertain path can still be a life worth building.

“I was no longer waiting passively for somebody else to build my career.
I had a process.”
